Yes. Staining works on existing concrete of any age. The surface needs to be clean, free of previous coatings, and porous enough to absorb the stain. Concrete that’s been sealed, painted, or treated with a curing compound may need grinding or stripping first.

The stain itself is permanent — it chemically bonds with or penetrates into the concrete. What fades is the sealer on top. Properly maintained stained concrete holds its color for 10–15 years or more.

You can go darker, but you can’t go lighter without grinding. A darker stain can be applied over existing stain. To lighten or completely change the color, the surface would need mechanical grinding to remove the stained layer, then re-staining.

The stain itself doesn’t change the texture. The sealer coat on top can be slick when wet. For exterior applications and anywhere near water, we add a non-slip additive. Interior floors with a matte sealer provide adequate traction for normal use.

Staining typically runs $4–$10 per square foot depending on stain type, number of colors, pattern complexity, and surface prep needed. A basic single-color acid stain on a clean slab is on the lower end. Multi-color layered applications with scoring run higher.
