Spray deck — also called cool deck or knockdown texture — is a thin acrylic polymer coating applied over existing or new concrete using a hopper gun. The material is sprayed on in a splatter pattern, then partially knocked down with a trowel to flatten the high points. The result is a lightly textured surface that’s cooler to walk on, slip-resistant, and available in multiple colors. It’s the go-to pool deck coating in Southeast Texas.
Application starts with surface preparation — pressure washing and, if needed, grinding or repairing the existing concrete. A primer or bonding coat is applied, followed by the spray deck material in a uniform pattern. The knockdown step flattens the texture to the desired profile — heavier for more grip, lighter for a smoother feel.

A quality spray deck application lasts 7–10 years before needing a recoat. Lifespan depends on sun exposure, traffic volume, chemical exposure (pool chemicals), and maintenance. Sections around pool ladders may need spot touch-ups before the full deck needs recoating.
It depends on the condition. If the current surface is well-bonded and in reasonable shape, a new coat can go over it after cleaning and priming. If the existing coating is peeling or heavily deteriorated, it needs to be removed first. We assess at the estimate.
Spray deck adds a very thin layer — typically 1/8” or less — so it doesn’t significantly change grade or drainage. However, if your pool deck currently has ponding or drainage issues, the coating won’t fix them. Drainage problems need to be addressed at the slab level first.
Standard colors include tan, sandstone, desert beige, gray, off-white, and terra cotta. Lighter colors stay cooler — an important consideration for pool decks in full sun. Custom color mixing is available. We recommend lighter tones for uncovered pool areas.
The materials are available to consumers, but achieving a consistent, professional texture requires practice with the hopper gun and knockdown technique. Uneven texture, lap marks, and inconsistent color are common DIY results. For a surface you’ll walk on barefoot every day, professional application is worth it.
